The Ukraine Zoos Emergency Fund will be administered according to a strict protocol with a comprehensive list of claimable items. To understand better how the money collected by the fund will be spent, please see the Protocol document and Claims List below.
Thanks to your immense generosity, the EAZA Ukraine Zoos Emergency Fund has raised € 1,389,606! (updated on 24 June)
As part of the Primary crisis phase (see Funding Protocol above for detailed explanation), funds have already been sent to Ukrainian zoos to buy food and veterinary supplies and allow to care for animals in the institutions, as well as for fuel and transport to bring supplies to zoos.
The following have received direct financial assistance: Askania Nova Nature Reserve, Berdyansk Zoo, Feldman Ecopark, Kharkiv Zoo, Kyiv Zoo, Mena Zoo, Mykolaiv Zoo, Odesa Biopark, Rivne Zoo and ZooMir Bilytske.
Additionally, we are aware that colleagues at Panda Foundation of Warsaw, Łódź Zoo, Berlin Zoo and Tierpark, Prague, Wrocław, Košice, Gdansk, Tallinn Zoos and other EAZA Members have also arranged trucks that delivered supplies to, at least: XII months, Bilytske, Cherkasy, Feldman Ecopark, Kharkiv, Limpopo, Lutsk, Mykolaiv, Odesa Biopark and Odesa State Zoo, Poltava, Rivne, Vinnytsia Zoos.
We are coordinating future efforts so that monies from the Fund can support more future deliveries of supplies. We continue to be in touch with zoos who are able to request additional funds as needed.
The situation for Ukrainian zoos remains mixed. In the West (including the Kyiv area), the withdrawal of defeated Russian forces has reduced direct threats since our last update but indiscriminate bombing and artillery attacks continue, still threatening the staff and animals of zoos. The animals are receiving food and care, and the zoos are not asking for animals to be relocated. In the East of Ukraine, renewed offensives still threaten the zoos in or near Kharkiv. It is increasingly difficult for us to remain in contact with Kharkiv Zoo and Feldman Ecopark has been severely damaged. The animals remaining on site are fed daily and the zoo has plans to evacuate them when it becomes possible. With our partners, we will continue to provide whatever support we can until the danger has passed.
We are also saddened by the discovery of the bodies of two zookeepers from Feldman Ecopark, apparently murdered by Russian occupation forces. The deaths of keepers, who chose to remain at the zoo site to care for animals despite the dangers to their safety and had no connection to the war, are inexcusable. These war crimes bring further shame on Russia and we call for the perpetrators to be brought to justice in Ukraine at the earliest possible opportunity.

We want to acknowledge the extraordinary work done by teams from Łódź, Warsaw, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Berlin, Prague and Košice Zoos, who have done most of the supply work so far!
Money from the EAZA Fund will also be used to combine with these efforts.
